Skill Sessions

Our Spring Work Skills Sessions with the dates all on Saturdays from 8:30 - 12:30. We may schedule a second shift on some days from noon till 4 pm. The remaining date is May 12 . We will be working as partners with the Chesapeake Housing Mission to find the proper learning opportunities and at the same time help our neighbors in need.. Final site selection will be made 30 days prior to the date and be posted on this web site. Although we may operate two shifts at some of the skills sessions, we reserve the right to limit the participants per shift depending on the project.

Our Third Spring Skills Workday will be on Saturday, May 12. We will be working at the home of Izetta Tilghman at 201 West Philadelphia Street in Salisbury, MD. Taking Division Street North, turn left on West Phildelphia after crossing the rail road tracts. Parking is limited so we will carpool from Asbury UMC parking lot. We will be working in two shifts. Mrs.Taylor will call to schedule your shift. You will be required to work two of the three spring skills session. In case of rain, the information will be posted on the front page of the website.

Team Leaders Jeff Harman, Stephen Hearne, Mary Bellis, Brian Hildreth, Brian Twilley and Ross Leisten are asked to be at the job site at 7:30 AM. All other adults and youth meet at Asbury at 8 am for car pooling. They will be returned to Asbury by noon for pickup. Second shift Youth and Adults need to be at Asbury by 11:30 am for carpooling. They will be returned to Asbury around 5 PM or when the project is complete. See more specific instructions below.: 

Parking will be on the street and is limited.

Goals of the Skills/Safety Sessions are:

  1. Review safety procedures relating to the types of construction that ASP expects to encounter in Appalachia.
  2. Discuss and review clothing, tools and other job site issues.
  3. Learn and practice construction techniques.
  4. Work for Christian Shelter to support their current missions.
  5. Create opportunities for developing team work and getting to know each member of the 2010 Asbury ASP work team.

Each ASP work team member must attend at least two of the above skills sessions in the spring in order to be eligible to go on the trip. Make ups will not be scheduled.

What To Bring:

Jeans, work shoes, gloves, appropriate shirts and a head covering. No bare midrifts. You may elect to bring a hammer, nail pocket and glasses/goggles or other eye protection. We will have a few of these on site as needed. No Cell Phones at the site.
